AINS Group to design Hitachi Energy’s new production and technology centre
Hitachi Energy is having a new production and technology centre built near Vaasa. A total of 35,000 floor square metres will be built this autumn in industrial area of Vikby to develop and produce state-of-the-art technology to promote a sustainable energy future. AINS Group has been chosen to be responsible for the centre’s structural and geotechnical design.
State-of-the-art production and testing lines for transformer production, including modern office premises, will be completed in 2027 in the production and technology centre being built in Mustasaari, in the Vikby industrial area outside Vaasa. All this will be built on a 12-hectare plot in the Vikby 2 area. Massive excavation work will begin in the autumn, with work on the building frames commencing next spring.
– It’s great to be able to utilise our comprehensive structural and geotechnical expertise in yet another investment project that promotes the green transition in energy production. The design for the centre’s production facilities and office premises has already begun. We are responsible for the structural engineering of multiple buildings, ranging from the production building to the office premises and warehouses,” says project manager Timo Leppänen of AINS Group.
For fire safety reasons, the buildings will have mostly concrete frames, and steel structures are used in some buildings to enable long spans and easier installation.
– Our new production and technology centre enables us to double the production and testing capacity of transformers in Finland to meet growing demand. Transformers play a key role in the electrification of energy systems and in making the electrical power system effective and reliable. We will develop and manufacture a number of key technologies crucial for the green transition in energy production and the security of supply of electricity,” says Matti Vaattovaara, CEO of Hitachi Energy Finland.
Hitachi Energy, the largest energy technology hub in the Nordic countries, operating in the Vaasa region, will create 200 new jobs thanks to the investment of approximately 170 million euros. Other design and project planning sites by AINS Group in the Vaasa region include the Smart Technology Hub of Wärtsilä, opened in 2022, and the Pått heat pump plant by Vaasan Energia that was completed earlier this year.
