AINS Group and Elomatic to implement Helen's Hanasaari electric boiler plant
Energy company Helen has selected AINS Group and Elomatic to implement Europe's largest electric boiler plant. The plant and its associated heat storage units will be constructed in front of the decommissioned power plant building in Hanasaari, Helsinki. The electricity used by the plant will be produced without carbon dioxide emissions.
The 200-megawatt electric boiler plant to be built in the Hanasaari energy block in Helsinki will consist of four electric boilers. The complex will include two 40-meter-high heat storage units. The electric boilers will raise the water temperature to a level suitable for the district heating network at times when electricity is inexpensive. The aim is to balance energy price fluctuations and increase production flexibility.
– The new plant is part of Helen's district heating production renewal, where various forms of waste heat, air, water, and electricity are increasingly utilized as heat sources. The plant is one of the largest in the world in terms of capacity and brings a new level of flexibility between the electricity and heat networks, says Juhani Aaltonen, director at Helen.
The actual construction work of the plant will begin in the fall of 2025. The consortium of AINS Group and Elomatic is comprehensively responsible for the project's management, design, procurement, site management, and supervision as Helen's partner under an EPCM contract (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management).
– The Hanasaari electric boiler plant is a significant investment that increases carbon-neutral district heating production. We are proud to lead the implementation and demonstrate our comprehensive expertise in various construction design fields and site management. The plant will be located in a visually prominent area, on a tight plot in an old industrial block, and the construction requires precise planning from the ground up, continues Anu Kuoppamäki, executive vice president at AINS Group.
– The Hanasaari electric boiler plant is an important step towards climate-friendly energy production. It is a great honor for us to be able to utilize our strong expertise in industrial engineering and energy production design in this uniquely large-scale project. We also bring with us extensive experience from similar projects and their technical interfaces, which is crucial for the success of such a project," says Karoliina Joensuu, industry director at Elomatic.
AINS Group and Elomatic have been offering comprehensive deliveries for the design and execution of industrial investment projects together since 2023. In the Hanasaari project, Elomatic is responsible for process, plant, electrical, and automation design, as well as the management of all shared design areas. AINS Group is in charge for project management, geo, structural, HVAC, and architectural design, site implementation management, and supervision.
The ground construction works for the electric boilers and their associated heat storage units will begin in Hanasaari in the spring of 2025. The plant complex is scheduled to be operational during the 2026–2027 heating season.
